Windermere tennis players Simone and Lauren Vranov-Brown easily defeated their opponents and helped lead Olympia High School to a victory over Dr. Phillips High School. The win gave OHS an 8-1 start to its season, which is the best in the program’s history.

The annual George DeSalvia Memorial Golf Tournament will be held May 30 at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Winter Garden. Registration begins at 12:15 p.m., with a 1:15 p.m. shotgun start.
DeSalvia was an officer with the Orlando Police Department when he was killed in the line of duty Feb. 3, 2000.
The cost is $75 per player, and $200 hole sponsorships also are available. Tournament proceeds will benefit the George DeSalvia Memorial Scholarship Fund for criminal-justice majors at the University of Central Florida.

 Cassandra “Scotti” Doty hits a hole-in-one during a recent golf tournament at the Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe.
Cassandra “Scotti” Doty earned her second career hole-in-one while playing in the recent Solheim Cup golf tournament at the Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe. Three witnesses watched as Doty aced the par-3 seventh hole, which was 145 yards. As part of their tradition, a celebratory bottle of champagne was shared at the conclusion of the tournament.

In recognition of his 24 years of dedication to Orlando’s premier golf tournament, Windermere resident Victor Matsko received a 2009 Arnold Palmer Invitational Presented by MasterCard Volunteer of the Year award.
Matsko retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service and moved to Florida, where he worked at Walt Disney World Resort and Red Lobster before retiring a second time.

 The Orlando Area Rowing Society wins the All Points Trophy at the OARS Youth Invitational Regatta.
The Orlando Area Rowing Society hosted the 11th annual OARS Youth Invitational Regatta at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. More than 1,400 high school students competed in the rowing event, which is the second largest in the state. OARS took home the All Points Trophy, and both the women’s varsity and junior-varsity eight-boats placed first in their respective events. The men’s junior-varsity eight-boat placed second.

 Olympia High School’s baseball team delivers supplies to a local homeless shelter.
Members of Olympia High School’s baseball team collected and delivered much-needed supplies to a local homeless shelter. The players spent time with residents and provided special mementos from their visit. They also visited a local senior center.

The Orlando Magic, SunSports, Tobacco Free Florida and Power 95.3-FM co-sponsored a pep rally at Chain of Lakes Middle School. CLMS won the rally through an online contest on the Magic’s Web site. Guard Courtney Lee made an appearance and spoke to students about the importance of staying drug-free. Numerous NBA mascots also were in attendance, including Stuff the Magic Dragon, Bowser from the Indiana Pacers, Harry the Hawk from the Atlanta Hawks, Rocky the Mountain Lion from the Denver Nuggets, Crunch from the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Sly the Silver Fox from the New Jersey Nets. TFF provided digital images showing students how they would look in 20 years if they choose to smoke, and Power 95.3-FM provided musical entertainment.

A new Orlando-based 8v8 outdoor soccer league is beginning June 9, with games held Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at Austin-Tindall Regional Park in Kissimmee. The league, which will meet for eight weeks, includes men, women and coed teams, as well as open, over-30 and over-40 options.

The South Orlando Rowing Association is currently registering new and experienced rowers for a summer rowing program. Central Florida students in sixth through 12th grade are eligible to participate. Adults also are encouraged to join.
The program takes place June 6 through July 9 at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. Rowing experience is not necessary.

 Olympia High School graduate Vincent Torres signs a letter of intent to play Division 1 soccer at Florida Atlantic University.
Southwest resident Vincent Torres, a member of the Florida Rush 18-under soccer team, signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 soccer at Florida Atlantic University. The Olympia High School graduate has played the sport since age 4 and served as the assistant coach for OHS’s 2008-09 men’s varsity soccer team. He was invited to participate in the Super Y-League Olympic Development Program National Camp in 2007 and was named as an SYL ODP National Select Player in 2008. At age 17, Torres played in the U20 SYL Nationals in Virginia. He also has competed in youth tournaments in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy and Hungary.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida is gearing up for its Celebrate The Children 2009 fundraiser. The event includes a reception and silent auction May 13 and golf tournament May 15.
The reception and silent auction will be held at the Rosen Centre Hotel on International Drive from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Individual tickets are $400.
The golf tournament will be held at ChampionsGate Golf Club at 7 a.m. The cost is $1,500 per foursome. Sponsorships for both events range from $400 to $12,000.

Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales will host the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Mid Florida Chapter’s Bike MS: The Citrus Tour 2009 from May 16 through May 17. The two-day, 150-mile ride includes three route options, rest stops every eight to 12 miles, and support vehicles. Bikers travel from Lake Wales to the Caribe Royale Orlando All-Suites Hotel & Convention Center, where the event will culminate with a celebratory dinner.
A minimum fundraising goal of $250 is required to participate.

The School Wish Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides supplies to local schools at no cost, will sponsor a fundraising golf tournament May 30 at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford. The Drive for Excellence, which includes a two-person scramble, begins at 11:30 a.m. It also includes contests, player gifts, awards, a raffle, auction, dinner and more. The cost is $125 per golfer.

DPHS tied for No. 3 on the Florida High School Athletic Association 2008-09 Dodge Sunshine Cup Class 6A All-Sports Awards overall standings after the completion of winter sports. Winter Park High School (No. 2) is the only metro conference competitor ahead of the Panthers.
The men’s track and field team won its first Metro Conference championship since 2002. Individual champions were Novian Middleton and Alex Mund.
The men’s and women’s tennis teams finished third and second, respectively, at their district tournaments. Jacqui Sunga won her first district champion title.
