Angels Trace representatives have canceled the May 19 charity golf tournament that was to be held at Stoneybrook West Golf Club in Winter Garden. The organization’s next fund-raiser will take place in August.

The 12-under Inter-United Soccer Club of Orlando Bad Girls team won the Apopka 3v3 Challenge after winning all six of its games and outscoring its opponents 44-8. The team is coached by Obbie Cirilo, and members are Mari Cirilo, Molly Gradl of Winter Garden, Selena Jaimes and Paxton Sickler.

Turnburry resident Paige Malick placed first in her division at the Sunshine Region Pony Club Show Jumping Rally in Gainesville. This win advances Malick to the U.S. Pony Club Nationals in Lexington, Ky. in July. The Lake Highland Preparatory School senior and her horse, LWild, will compete in the 3-foot-3-inch and 3-foot-9-inch Show Jumping divisions.

Seven members of the Running Divas — and one honorary “Divo” — completed the inaugural ING Georgia Marathon. This was the second marathon for Veronica Carmean, Tricia Joseph, Amy Robertson and Jen Werstack. However, it was the first full marathon for Allison Fullerton, Trevor and Madie Larsen, and Monica Stamper. While the team trained on the hills in Clermont, the 26.2-mile Georgia course was much more difficult, and the city experienced record high temperatures on the day of the race. However, all eight participants completed the marathon within the official time limit.

Windermere resident Austin Pickens places third in the country in quarter midget racing at the Western Grand Nationals in Kansas City, Kan.


Austin Pickens, a 13-year-old Windermere resident, competed in quarter midget racing at the Western Grand Nationals in Kansas City, Kan., and placed third in the country. Pickens competed against 700 other cars from across the United States.

He also completed his 2005 racing year by winning the points series at his home track, the New Smyrna Speedway.

Dr. Phillips Pop Warner announced its 2006-07 All-American Scholars. In order to apply for All-American status, student-athletes must be in grades five through eight and have a 96 percent grade-point average. Congratulations to the following football honorees:

Dr. Phillips High School’s men’s golf team is holding a fund-raising golf tournament at MetroWest Golf Club on May 20 at 1:30 p.m. The event also includes a silent auction, and items available include memorabilia signed by Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski and golf legend Arnold Palmer, rounds of golf, theme-park tickets and more.

The cost is $80 per player, which includes 18 holes of golf, a barbecue dinner, games, prizes, awards and more.

Orlando Magic player and Southwest resident Bo Outlaw is named 2006-07 winner of the Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award.


Orlando Magic player and Southwest resident Bo Outlaw won the Rich & Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award for the third time and second consecutive year.

Each year at the Orlando Magic’s Black Tie & Tennies Charity Gala, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation honors a player who has dedicated his efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing others’ lives.

Outlaw has consistently volunteered his time and supported the Central Florida community, as well as the initiatives of the Magic’s community-relations department.

Congratulations to Olympia High School’s women’s tennis team on the completion of a great season. In addition to playing against teams in their own district, the women traveled the state and played schools in Tallahassee, Naples, Winter Park and more.

A group of friends from the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA Family Center participated in the Tour de Cure 100-mile bike ride. The round-trip course took riders from Christmas to Sanford and back. Proceeds from the event benefited the American Diabetes Association.

Windermere resident Karyn Lund won the Track Shack Grand Prix Series, which began this past August. The seven races that compose the series vary from 5Ks to 10Ks, and racers accumulate points based on where they place. The series ended with the 10K CNL Winter Park Road Race.

Dr. Phillips High School graduates Tiffany Cook and Doug Gabriel will be inducted into the DPHS Athletic Hall of Fame on May 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the north campus cafeteria. The annual athletic awards will also be presented.

Cook, who was a four-year letterman in track and field, is one of the most decorated track athletes in Central Florida. In addition to setting five school records, she was named Orange County Track Athlete of the Year in 1997 and set three Metro Conference records. She was the Metro Conference champion in the 400-meter, is a four-time district champion in the 100- and 200-meters, and won the 400-meter district championship. Cook continued on to win two regional, three state, and two Great Eight championships. She also participated in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Training Camp. After graduation, she accepted a track scholarship to Florida International University.

Gabriel was a three-year letterman in football, and was named All-State and All-Metro Conference in 1998. He set school records for most receiving yards in a season and career. Gabriel received offers from both Florida State University and the University of Miami, however, he attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College before playing for the University of Central Florida. While at UCF, Gabriel started every game and set the UCF record for all-purpose yards. He was named to the All-American Dream Team, third team, in 2002; as well as All-Mid-American Conference, first-team. Gabriel is currently a wide receiver for the National Football League Oakland Raiders.

Cycle Riders-Ride Now Powersports, Darden Restaurants and WDBO 580-AM will co-present the Florida Safety Council’s seventh annual Scholarship Classic Golf Tournament on May 18 at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., and play will commence at 8 a.m. The cost is $100 per person or $375 per foursome.

The day includes golf, goodie bags, door prizes, a buffet lunch, silent auction and more.

The Orlando Area Rowing Society places first at the OARS Invitational Regatta.


More than 30 teams and 1,000 rowers participated in the eighth Orlando Area Rowing Society Invitational Regatta. This is one of the largest regattas in the southeast United States.

OARS placed first at the event with a total of 795 points, followed by the Atlanta Junior Rowing Association and St. Andrews Rowing Club.

From OARS, first-place finishers included women’s varsity eight, men’s freshman four, women’s junior-varsity eight, women’s novice four, men’s third eight, men’s lightweight four and women’s junior-varsity four.

Riders from Snow Kissed Stables in Winter Garden participated in Horse Shows In The Sun’s recent event in Ocala, taking home grand champion honors in two events. Participating riders included Ashley and Lindsay Bowdoin of Windermere, Margaret Collins of Celebration, and Kelsey Tressler of Winter Garden. The girls’ trainers are Amy Mayer and Suzanne Muchow.

The nonprofit organization Freedom Ride will present its fourth annual Derby Day Soiree at Villa Esperanza, a 2006 award-winning Street of Dreams home, on May 5 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $50; $45 for seniors.

The evening will include a virtual Kentucky Derby, live and silent auctions, a derby hat contest, hors d’oeuvres, mint juleps and more.
Proceeds benefit Freedom Ride, Central Florida’s only nationally accredited therapeutic horseback riding center for disabled children and adults.

Turtle Creek resident Sarah Baron placed first in the girls 10s division at Track Shack Foundation’s Smile Mile Race held in Baldwin Park. Baron ran one mile in 6 minutes, 39 seconds.

In addition to running, Baron enjoys soccer, tennis, jumping rope, photography and playing drums.

After suffering a devastating injury this past August, Dr. Phillips High School junior Chris Goodrum is recovered and back to playing basketball. In fact, this year Goodrum organized and coached his first basketball team, the SW AllStars, composed of boys ages 13 and 14 who reside in Southwest Orlando.

The SW AllStars competed in Florida Basketball & Volleyball Association’s winter season and lost its division championship game by only one point.
Now, Goodrum and his assistant coaches, fellow DPHS students Eddie Garcia, Sydney Ware and Eddie Yiu, are preparing the SW AllStars for the FBVA spring season.

This new program is in addition to the club’s Saturday mixed doubles round-robin, drill sessions, lesson series, after-school and summer junior camps, and the teen safe-night-out program.

The Team Orlando Loreleis synchronized swim team places first at the Spring Invitational held at the YMCA Aquatic Center.


The Team Orlando Loreleis synchronized swimming team participated in The Synch in the Swamp that was held at the University of Florida.

The team of MacKenzie Anderson, Marianna Casas, Dorema Weirick and Paige Wells placed sixth overall in the 13-15 age group. In addition, Wells placed first in the intermediate level solo competition, and Anderson placed fourth.

In the figures competition, Megan Henson placed first in the intermediate 10-younger division; and Wells and Anderson placed third and fourth, respectively, in the age 13-15 division.

At the Spring Invitational, held at the YMCA Aquatic Center, Anderson, Casas, Weirick and Wells placed first in the age 13-15 team competition. Wells and Anderson also placed first and third, respectively, in the intermediate solo competition for ages 13-15; and Henson placed third in intermediate solo for ages 10-younger.

Windermere resident Warren Clegg is named as an Orlando Magic Hometown Hero.


As part of its Commitment to the Community efforts, the Orlando Magic Hometown Hero award, presented by Fifth Third Bank, is given to a resident who has shown dedication and made significant contributions to the Orlando community.

Recently, Windermere resident Warren Clegg, an American Red Cross volunteer, was named an Orlando Magic Hometown Hero. Clegg has been a Red Cross volunteer since 2003 and is training to become an official spokesman for ARC. He also is working to become a part of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team.

“I enjoy my volunteer work because I see what it does for people,” Clegg said. “I get to help those who might not have the chance to help themselves.”

The Keene’s Pointe Ladies Golf Association holds its inaugural Rally for the Cure event.


The Keene’s Pointe Ladies Golf Association held its inaugural Rally for the Cure at the Golden Bear Club. The event co-chairs, Pam Fouché and Anita Gonzalez, were pleased with the turnout. Thirty-one women in pink played a nine-hole scramble and enjoyed a business meeting and lunch.
The winners were the foursome of Marjorie Barch, Sherry Glisson, Carol Lazenby and Ana Leake.

Members of the Central Florida Working Women’s Tennis League elected the group’s new officers. The results of the elections were Dianne Arnold, president; Bonnie Kelly, first vice president; Diana Mincer, second vice president; Mary Sayago, secretary; and Dianne Grundy, treasurer.

Orange County Wrestling Club members participated in the Florida Ironman competition held in Sarasota.

The results of the event were Jordan Aronow (119 lbs.), third in the schoolboy division; Austin Hellinger (119 lbs.), fourth in the cadet division; John Hellinger (112 lbs.), first in the junior division; Tim Locksmith (95 lbs.), first in the schoolboy division; and Marcus Quintanilla (75 lbs.), fourth in the schoolboy division.

The Keene’s Pointe Ladies Golf Association held its inaugural nine-hole invitational. Sixty-four golfers representing 12 local golf and country clubs participated.

The front-nine winners were Laurie Bratton and Dianne Butler of Golden Bear Club, Priscilla O’Donnell of Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club, and Carmen Rogner of Orlando Country Club.

The back-nine winners were Frankie Dudding and Olga Haylek of Windermere Country Club, Joanne Matinrazm of Golden Bear Club, and Carol Morrow of Windermere Country Club.

Congratulations to the following Dr. Phillips High School student-athletes who were recognized for their accomplishments:

Basketball standout Chris Warren was named Orange County Player of the Year by the Orlando Sentinel. Warren finished his DPHS basketball career with 20 school records and led the team to a state runner-up finish. He also finished second in the voting for Class 6A Player of the Year.

Warren placed second in the high jump at the Florida Relays track and field event held in Gainesville. His teammate Curtis Huggins finished in the top eight in the 300-meter hurdles.

At the Special Olympics Area Games, Mario Ballesteros placed first in tennis singles, and John David Haywood finished first in the 1K and 5K races.

The men’s weightlifting team placed second at the Metro Conference championships. Jared Vaughn and Franklin Carter each placed second in their respective divisions, and Pedro Lopez and Carson Taliaferro each placed third.

Freshman wrestler Joe Locksmith was named to the All-Central Florida first team, as well as the All-Orange County first team. At the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Championship, Locksmith finished with a record of 5-2 to place in the top 12 in the United States.

Also, senior wrestlers Carlos Morales and Kevin Teixeira, junior Jorge Benzaquen, and sophomore John Hellinger were named to the All-Orange County team.

Senior catcher Bradley Hutton has committed to playing baseball next year at Georgia Southern University.

DPHS graduate Blair Bodenmiller was named softball Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. She currently plays at Florida Atlantic University.
